Tips To Get Your Caravan Ready to Go

As winter comes to a close, you may consider getting your van ship shape before venturing into another spring and summer and travel, fun and cooking some great meals in the Aussie outdoors.

Inspect for Any Rust

It’s important to get to any potential rust points early and treat it. Check under your caravan all around the chassis, rear bumper and the front section up to your tow bar. Check on the roof for any bracket and connections that may be associated with antennas, solar panels and air conditioning.

Inspect your van for safety and leaks

Make certain that everything is still safe and check for any leaks that may have occurred.  Check your fly screens to make sure there are no tears. Check your awning to ensure it opens easily and check that there are no tears.

If necessary, give it a good clean particularly if you see any mould residue.

Put some water in your water tanks and ensure that taps and pumps are working fine. Get under the van and check for leaks of any kind under the van.

Batteries

In most campervans or motorhomes there will be more than 1 battery so make sure you don’t forget your dual battery system in your inspections. Turn everything on and ensure that no batteries have died over the winter months. Hopefully you disconnected your battery throughout winter and now you’re ready to reconnect and test.

Clean and dry your batteries removing any dirt and grime. Ensure everything is tight and secure including your terminals, clamps and screws. Lastly test your battery with a voltmeter or hydrometer.

Batteries have a finite life span, but with proper maintenance you will get the most years out of them. If you are unsure as to how to check any component your local caravan service centre can help you out.

Tyres and Wear and Tear Items

Check your tyre pressure and check that all your tyres are in good condition.  If your van has been idle for some time, you may have some flat spots.

The best way to ensure that your tyres are in their best shape is to lift them off the ground if possible. Alternatively, you can cover them.  If possible, when you’re not using your van for long periods of time, every so often, drive around the block a few times to avoid getting flat spots. If you do drive around then, pop by the local service station and check the air pressure.

Hot Water System & Gas Bottles

If you have an ensuite with hot water, then check that the system is working as intended.

Check your gas bottles to make sure that you don’t have any leaks and that your gas is circulating around the van. The best way is to connect the barbie and light it up for a few minutes.

Shake, Rattle and Roll

Once you’ve inspected all you can take your caravan or recreational vehicle for a spin and try to find a bumpy road somewhere.   Listen carefully for any rattles or noises coming from your caravan.

If necessary, have someone else drive the van so that you can pay attention to noises and rattles.

Remember the option to take your caravan or recreational vehicle to a service centre is also readily available.
